'Old Abe' is the Army ring we designed in recognition of the young bald eagle mascot for the Eighth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Years later, it was decided Old Abe should symbolically take part in the greatest airborne assault in history when the Allies launched their invasion of France in 1944. Today, America’s elite 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles,” still wear a patch depicting Old Abe on their left shoulders.
